Become part of a superb academic research and teaching community: at our departments and interdisciplinary fields of research, at the Wissenschaftsstadt Darmstadt and the metropolitan region Frankfurt Rhine-Main Rhine-Main Universities.

At TU Darmstadt, there are several different professorships, for instance assistant professorships (initially limited for six years) with tenure track (W2) and full (tenured) professorships (W2/W3).

Our professors are granted academic freedom in accordance with the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany (GG) (Article 5 Section 3 Sentence 1). Their right to strive for scientific knowledge autonomously with regard to content and methods used, and to organise their teaching with regard to content and didactics independently is, therefore, guaranteed by the German constitution.

W2 assistant professorships with tenure track are an attractive entry point for becoming a full (tenured) professor. It offers considerable autonomy and great scope for personal development. Following a doctorate and typically an initial postdoctoral phase, it is the W2 assistant professors’ responsibility to establish an academic research group, develop a strong academic research profile, earn high visibility in their respective academic research community and to become highly competent lecturers. A six-year tenure track professorship ending with a positive tenure decision will immediately advance to a full professorship.

Principles: Quality assurance, transparency and procedural reliability are the principles of assistant professorships with tenure track at TU Darmstadt.

Based on its experience to date, TU Darmstadt has updated its Tenure Guidelines (opens in new tab) . These Tenure Guidelines for TU Darmstadt provide an individual target agreement and a mid-term review as an important point of reference during the qualification phase of an assistant professorship with tenure track. Tenure is granted if the assistant professor has met the targets agreed and fulfils the personal requirements as expected during the tenure track period.

Implementation: New assistant professorships with tenure track are filled for a term of six years as W2 professorships.

In case of a positive tenure decision, such a fixed-term professorship usually turns into an open-ended full W2 professorship. Following another five years, your career path may lead to a W3 professorship based on an ad-personam procedure. In exceptional cases (i.e., receiving a prestigious prize, such as an ERC grant, or receiving an appointment offer for a qualitatively higher professorship), an immediate advancement to a full W3 professorship is possible.

The teaching load of assistant professorships with tenure track is limited to 4 contact hours per week (SWS). We expect excellent English skills and by the time of mid-term review at the latest, good German skills as well. You can expect an attractive, negotiable W2-based salary.
